A happy island – 30 years of words and pictures with illustrator and author Marit Törnqvist.
The exhibition is about the power of storytelling, Marit’s artistry and commitment to a better world and her unique relationship with Astrid Lindgren.
About Marit Törnqvist
In 1989, Marit Törnqvist made her debut as an illustrator with the publication of Astrid Lindgren’s A Calf for Christmas. After that, the two collaborated closely for many years, not least when Marit Törnqvist created the environments for The Story Journey at Junedale in Stockholm. Now – 30 years and an entire artistic life later – comes a new book in which Marit Törnqvist has illustrated Astrid Lindgren’s lullaby ‘Alla ska sova’. The release coincides with a showcase of Marit Törnqvist’s artistic work in a major exhibition at Astrid Lindgren’s Näs.

A happy island
The exhibition features many original illustrations, but it also depicts the work process itself. Visitors can take a peek into Marit’s studio, see how work on a book develops, look at ‘unsuccessful’ images that Marit has discarded and try out different illustration techniques themselves. Here we also encounter common themes that appear in the works of Astrid Lindgren and Marit Törnqvist: longing for childhood, oscillation between light and darkness and commitment to a better world. The exhibition is produced by Astrid Lindgren’s Näs in close cooperation with Marit Törnqvist.
