Astrid Lindgren and the Power of Stories
An exhibition about the girl from Näs, who became one of the world’s most beloved authors. Follow along from her upbringing in Näs and on through the various chapters of her life. Take part in the transformative experiences that shaped her writing and world of thought.
A soul set rocking
In the early 1900s, a little girl hears the first story of her life. The words turn to magic and set her childhood soul rocking, and it never really comes to rest. When the girl, named Astrid, grows up, she continues to write to amuse the child she once was. Her words will make a big impression on people all over the world. And it all began in that first encounter with the world of stories.

Get an insight into one of Sweden’s greatest authors
This exhibition starts with Astrid’s childhood here in Näs and then takes you through various chapters of her life. You will also learn about the sources of inspiration for the treasure trove of stories that have left their mark all over the world. You’ll hear the songs she sang in her childhood, which inspired the many she would go on to write herself, but also understand the despair she felt when she was forced to give up her son as a young woman.

Words as a weapon
Delve into her war diaries, which provide a unique insight into her thoughts and everyday life during the Second World War. Learn about her political stances against the injustices she saw. But above all, gain an insight into one of Sweden’s greatest authors and immerse yourself in Astrid Lindgren’s sources of inspiration and motivation.

“It began in Kristin’s kitchen, when I was about five years old. Until then, I was a small animal who, with my eyes, ears and all my senses, absorbed only what was natural. I didn’t realise that there was also culture until a flash of it hit me unexpectedly, when I stepped into Kristin’s kitchen on my little legs. Kristin was married to our cowman and, what was more, she was Edit’s mother. This Edit – blessed be she now and always – read to me the story of the giant Bam-Bam and the fairy Viribunda, and thus set my childhood soul rocking and it has not yet quite stopped.”
