At home with Astrid
Visiting Astrid Lindgren’s childhood home is like travelling back in time. Everything is still there, just as it was when Astrid was little. The harmonium she never wanted to practise on, the beautiful cushion she embroidered, the bed she was born in. All the other furniture, paintings and kitchen utensils. You almost expect Astrid and her three siblings to come running in and play ‘Got you’!
A guided visit to the childhood home becomes a living story about Astrid Lindgren’s family and life on a farm in the early 1900s. Today, the house is a private home owned by the family and can only be visited on one of our guided tours.
“There were two things that made our childhood what it was – security and freedom. It was safe with those two who cared so much about each other and who were always there, if we needed them, but otherwise let us freely and happily traverse the fantastic playground of our childhood Näs.”
From ‘Samuel August från Sevedstorp och Hanna i Hult’ by Astrid Lindgren
Näs Farm
In 1907, Astrid Anna Emilia Ericsson was born on Näs farm, which was then just outside Vimmerby. Näs was a vicarage lease and Astrid’s parents, Samuel August and Hanna, leased the land from the vicarage and ran the farm. It was not a large farm, but it was big enough that many people were needed to run it. Everyone’s labour was needed and the farmer’s children worked side by side with maids, farmhands and hired labourers.
